Principal Industrial Design Consultant
Over a period of 7+ years, RSID partnered with the leadership and engineering team to bring to market three generations of the da Vinci surgical robot platforms (da Vinci S, Si, and Xi).
The goal was to ensure these platforms not only met the high expectations set by the brand but also set new standards in the surgical robotics industry, particularly in terms of ergonomic design, workflow efficiency, and overall user experience.
As the sole in-house industrial designer consultant, RSiD played a crucial role in shaping the design direction and maintaining a cohesive visual language for the da Vinci platforms.
This included development of the new generation surgeon console, establishing ergonomic and workflow standards that would redefine the surgical experience with robotic platforms. Collaboration with both in-house and external ME consultants on DFM best practices was pivotal in optimizing the design for manufacturability.
By translating clinical engineering feedback into actionable design improvements, RSiD ensured that the final product met stringent requirements of the surgical community. Regular visits to vendors ensured that the final products maintained design integrity, particularly in areas such as industrial design, color materials, and finishes.
These efforts resulted in the successful launch of the da Vinci S, Si and Xi platforms to market, where they were recognized for their innovative award winning design and impact on the surgical robotics industry.
