OptiMedica - Catalys

Principal Industrial Design Consultant

RSiD’s collaboration with OptiMedica, later acquired by Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) and subsequently by J&J, yielded a groundbreaking design that revolutionized the ophthalmic surgery market.

RSiD’s expertise in product architecture, human factors/ergonomics, industrial design, prototyping and development played a pivotal role.

The design centered an ophthalmic laser delivery cart, featuring a unique “floating” laser-head that was securely docked on the patient’s eye via a liquid optic interface.

This innovation provided unprecedented mobility to the laser cart, liberating the valuable floor-space within a cluttered ophthalmic OR suite.

As a result, surgeons gained enhanced flexibility, enabling them to utilize the same square footage for other equipment, thereby adding value and functionality to ophthalmic surgery clinics.

Following OptiMedica’s acquisition by AMO, the project was shelved. Nonetheless, RSID’s design had a profound impact in optimizing space utilization, setting new industry standards in transforming the OR suite landscape, while also empowering surgeons with greater flexibility and efficiency.
